The Hazeltons Travel Guide
Welcome to The Hazeltons!
Located in the Great Bear Rainforest along the formidable Skeena River and comprised of three villages known as the Old, New and South Towns, The Hazeltons have been the ancestral home to the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en peoples for thousands of years. At Kispiox Village the river's shores are lined with expertly carved totem poles marking their original meeting grounds, and the 'Ksan Historical Village and Museum is a tactile attraction, preserving several traditional log homes along with other important community buildings, all brought to life by resident local artisans demonstrating ancient techniques.
The Hazeltons' modern history began at the end of the 19th century, when the villages were the upriver terminus for tough sternwheelers that plowed precarious rapids of the Skeena to bring supplies to settlers living inland. A somewhat lawless age, several legends abound of outlaws, bank robbers, courageous captains and quirky wilderness buffs. Old Town Hazelton maintains its frontier feel and is a pleasant and picturesque stroll. For outdoor-lovers, the encircling Roche de Boule Range and nearby national parks are ideal for adventures in nature, and the Skeena is well-known as a premiere rafting river.
